Matthew’s relationship with music began in his childhood with piano lessons and learning to play the guitar. It went from a hobby to a career when he began learning how to mix audio. He became a lead audio engineer and equipment manager and soon began playing the keyboard and guitar on stage and even singing and performing songs he wrote. It was through that experience that Matthew realized the power of music and found a feeling of awe in how it can make you dance, cry, yell, and laugh.

From there he branched out to DJing weddings for friends and family and that’s where he learned the more playful side of music and fell in love with being able to get people moving and singing along. 

Matthew has now found a home with the DJ Cuttlefish team where he DJs weddings and events in Atlanta. 

Matthew describes his DJ style as free-flowing, nostalgic, and energetic.

His favorite part of DJing is being able to contribute to a memorable moment in people’s lives, whether that be a dance, birthday party, or wedding. He knows people may not remember the exact music being played or even who the DJ was during their special moment, but he can help make sure they always remember how they felt – happy, free, and enjoying life to the fullest. 

Matthew believes a successful party is when everyone goes to sleep tired, sore in the feet, and smiling about the memories made. 

When preparing for events, he puts himself in the shoes of the client and guests, learns what their goal is, and finds a way to achieve that through his role as the DJ and plans the set list and atmosphere from there.

His go to dance move? Drake Hands. A lot less manicured, but they end up moving like Drake. A little bit cheesy, a little bit cringey, but a whole lot of expression. Gotta love ‘em. 

A good time to Matthew is time well spent with friends and family. If there’s carrot cake, his favorite dessert, even better. In his free time, you can find him taking a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoying the quiet outdoors by hiking and camping with his significant other. He describes his personal style as relaxed, comfortable, and practical.

If he won the lottery, he would make sure his closest loved ones were taken care of. What a saint. 

Matthew speaks rudimentary levels of Cambodian and is always improving his skills.
